Proper management of crops vital to reduce losses

Recent unseaonal rain in Punjab has affected wheat, maize and fodder crops at some 35,000 acres of land as per initial and indefinite estimate

LAHORE, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 17th Apr, 2019 ) :Recent unseaonal rain in Punjab has affected wheat, maize and fodder crops at some 35,000 acres of land as per initial and indefinite estimate.

Punjab Agriculture department spokesman said on Wednesday that farmers must take special steps for proper management of their crops.

Sources said farmers had been suggested to stay vigilant and continuously monitor the weather alerts and incase of possible chances of rain, wheat harvesting should be stopped.

Growers must cover the harvested wheat with tarpaulin and if wheat gets affected with the rain then it should be dried in sunlight, sources added.

This year rain had occurred more than usual and the temperature also remained low so growers should start harvesting when the crop fully ripes.

Sources further said combined harvester was best machine as it helps in reducing the yielding loss to a great extent.

Maize growers have been advised to drain rain water in nearby empty field.

Growers must seek guidance from the staff of agriculture department of their respective areas to deal with the possible attack of insects and diseases on the maize crop.

Fodder growers should also adopt measures as per the guideline of the agriculture department to handle the rain water.
