LAHORE, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 11th Oct, 2018 ) :Punjab Agriculture Minister Malik Nouman Ahamd Langrial said on Thursday that the agriculture department was encouraging drip irrigation under ongoing Punjab Irrigated-Agriculture Productivity Improvement Project (PIPIP) to overcome scarcity of water.
According to a handout issued here, the minister said under this project the department was installing drip and sprinkler irrigation system on subsidy basis.
This technology, so far, had been adopted by many farmers across Punjab owing to acute shortage of river water and limited rains, he added.
The minister said keeping in view high efficiency of the system in conserving water, increasing per acre yield and reducing cost of cultivation, there was a need to create awareness among farmers about the drip irrigation system.
The minister said with this technology, farmers could save 60% electricity and diesel cost.
He said, " It is the need of the hour to move towards modern resource conservation technologies such as drip irrigation to cope with possible water scarcity in upcoming years".
