Gazprom to Start Exploring New Gas Field With Potential to Produce Gas Until 2131 - Putin

MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 19th March, 2019) Russia's energy giant Gazprom is starting the exploration of the Kharasaveyskoye field with enormous gas reserves, located on the Yamal Peninsula beyond the Arctic circle, on Wednesday, President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday, adding that the field has a potential to produce gas until 2131.

"[Russia] has a colossal potential in the energy sphere. Tomorrow Gazprom is launching work on the new Kharasaveyskoye field. Together with the Bovanenkovskoye field it accommodates 7 trillion cubic meters of gas. This field [has a potential] to produce gas until 2131. These are planetary reserves," Putin said during a meeting with the finalists of the Leaders of Russia contest.

The Kharasaveyskoye gas field is located predominately onshore and partly in the Kara Sea, according to data from Gazprom.

The energy giant classifies the field as "unique" due to its "enormous gas reserves" - 2 trillion cubic meters. The field is expected to produce some 32 billion cubic meters of gas per year, according to the Gazprom schedule.

The company is planning to build a 62-mile gas pipeline connecting the Kharasaveyskoye and Bovanenkovskoye fields in order to convey the produced gas which then will be fed into Russia's Unified Gas Supply System.

Yamal, a remote Arctic peninsula, is a major center of gas production. Gazprom predicts that the region with its 32 fields will soon produce up to 360 billion cubic meters of gas a year. As of 2017, the peninsula produced over 82 billion cubic meters of gas.
