LAHORE, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 9th Apr, 2025) Provincial Minister of Industry and Commerce Chaudhry Shafay Hussain highlighted the vital role of the textile sector in Pakistan’s economy, noting its significant contribution to employment.
He was speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the two-day 9th International Conference on Textile and Clothing, organised by the school of Design and Textiles at the University of Management and Technology (UMT) on Wednesday.
During his address, the minister highlighted the government's ongoing efforts to foster the growth of the textile sector, which he described as crucial for stabilising the national economy. He particularly mentioned the development of the Garment City at the Quaid-i-Azam business Park in Sheikhupura, where industrial units are being constructed for lease. Additionally, the government plans to transfer textile industry technology from China to the Garment City, aiming to modernize local industries.
Chaudhry Shafay also outlined government initiatives to enhance cotton production through seed development programs, which will benefit local farmers. Special incentives, including a 10-year income tax exemption and a one-time duty-free importation of machinery, are being offered to investors in Punjab's Special Economic Zones, he added.
The conference, attended by over 300 national and international scholars and researchers, featured the presentation of more than 40 research papers.
The event also included expert sessions on virtual product development and fiber recycling. Among those in attendance were UMT Rector Dr. Asif Raza, Director of Research & Innovation Professor Abid Sherwani, Dean Dr. Mumtaz Malik, and several distinguished academics and students.
In his welcome speech, UMT Rector Dr. Asif Raza stressed the importance of stronger collaboration between academia and industry to address the challenges faced by the textile sector. He underscored UMT’s commitment to shaping the next generation of leaders and entrepreneurs who will play a pivotal role in the country’s development. Dr. Raza also emphasized that the university’s School of Design and Textiles is at the forefront of fostering innovation within the industry.
Professor Abid Sherwani, Director of Research & Innovation, also recognized the textile sector as the backbone of Pakistan’s economy, noting its position as the largest employer and taxpayer in the country. He called for strengthening Pakistan's textile policy to promote further growth in the sector.
At the conclusion of the conference, Professor Abid Sherwani and Dr. Asif Raza presented a commemorative souvenir to Provincial Minister Chaudhry Shafay Hussain in recognition of his support for the event and the textile industry.
