The future transit of Russian gas through the territory of Ukraine, if maintained, must meet economic requirements and must be reasonable in economic terms, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Saturday ahead of the talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

"I would like to stress that the main point is that the Ukrainian transit, which is traditional for [Russia], would meet economic requirements, as well as would be economic in every sense of this word," Putin said.
