CAIRO (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 22nd September, 2018) Fuel supplies in the Libyan capital of Tripoli and its suburbs are under threat since only three out of 15 local fuel storage tanks have remained undamaged as a result of continuing fighting in the area, Mustafa Sanalla, the chairman of the board of the National Oil Corporation (NOC) said.
"The situation at Brega's storage tanks located on the airport road is terrible ... We have nothing. The supply situation is extremely critical. We no longer have any logistical flexibility to supply Tripoli and suburbs with fuel," Sanalla said in a video address, published by the NOC on Facebook on Friday.
The official recalled that nine out of 15 storage tanks were damaged by the fighting of armed groups back in 2014.
Over the past few days, the company lost three more tanks due to the intensified hostilities in the area, meaning that only three tanks remained operational, Sanalla explained.
Moreover, the NOC General Sales Department has recently been destroyed by shelling, according to Sanalla.
"NOC is unable to carry out its duties under such difficult conditions," Sanalla stressed.
The official concluded by calling on all conflicting parties in the area of Tripoli to cease hostilities.
Tripoli has been hit by multiple clashes between rival militant groups since late August. On Sunday, the Libyan Government of National Accord (GNA) declared a state of emergency in the capital city and its surroundings.
