German lawmaker from the euroskeptic party Alternative for Germany (AfD) Stefan Keuter told Sputnik on Friday that the Embassy of Ukraine sent a letter to the German Foreign Ministry urging German citizens to refrain from attending the Yalta International Economic Forum (YIEF)
"The Ukrainian Embassy sent a letter to the German Foreign Ministry, urging citizens not to attend this forum. Ukrainian and German governments are trying to put pressure on people not to go to Crimea," Keuter said on the sidelines of the YIEF.
He added that the embassy sent to the ministry a list of persons who allegedly planned to come to Crimea, and asked the German authorities to take measures to prevent those people from visiting the peninsula.
The 2019 Yalta International Economic Forum is being held from Thursday through Saturday, with over 4,500 people from some 100 countries participating in the event.
Crimea rejoined Russia in 2014, when 97 percent of those who participated in the referendum on the matter supported the reunification. The reunification was not recognized by Ukraine or Western states, which subsequently imposed economic and political sanctions on Moscow. Russia has repeatedly stated that the referendum was conducted in compliance with international law.
