WASHINGTON (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 24th April, 2019) US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin in a letter to House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal said he will make a final decision on their request for US President Donald Trump's tax returns by May 6.
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) missed the committee's deadline on Tuesday to release Trump's tax returns.
"Although Federal law establishes no deadline for a response to your request, we expect to provide the Committee with a final decision by May 6, after receiving the Justice Department's legal conclusions," Mnuchin said on Tuesday.
The Department of Treasury is consulting with the Department of Justice regarding the request, Mnuchin said.
He added that the Treasury Department cannot act on the committee's request "until it is determined to be consistent with the law."
Neal, whose committee is the House's chief tax-writing body, formally requested six years of Trump's personal and business tax records from the IRS by the end of day on April 23.
Neal warned that a failure to respond to his request would be interpreted as a denial. White House acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney said in an interview with Fox news that this demand was a stunt and vowed that Congressional Democrats would never see Trump's tax records.
