World Needs Russia's Help in Fighting Climate Change - Shell CEO

The world needs Russia's assistance in fighting the global climate change as the country has huge gas resources and industrial strength, Ben van Beurden, the CEO of Shell, wrote in an article for RIA Novosti

MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 15th March, 2019) The world needs Russia's assistance in fighting the global climate change as the country has huge gas resources and industrial strength, Ben van Beurden, the CEO of Shell, wrote in an article for RIA Novosti.

"Renewable energy, greater energy efficiency and transport - with electric cars and other cleaner transport fuels like LNG - are all opportunities for Russia, as for other countries. But Russia's real opportunity is much bigger. Because Russia has the chance to use the resources at its disposal to provide a crucial contribution to reducing the world's emissions. And the world will need Russia's help," van Beurden said.

He pointed out that Russia could play a crucial role in fighting climate change due to its gas resources and industrial strength.

"The world must tackle climate change, as well as air pollution. So the world needs cleaner energy.

And, with its huge gas resources and its industrial strength, Russia can provide both," van Beurden noted.

According to van Beurden, the need to implement the Paris climate agreement, particularly, to keep the increase in average global temperature at below 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) above pre-industrial levels.

"To achieve the goal of the Paris Agreement, the world is likely to have to stop adding greenhouse gases to the stock in the atmosphere by 2070. But by 2070 the world is likely to be using at least 50% more energy than it does today. So the challenge is not just to reduce emissions, but to do this at the same time as the world increases the amount of energy it is using," the Shell CEO stressed.

According to van Beurden, the mankind should use more alternative sources of energy: solar energy, wind, biofuels, hydrogen and, above all, natural gas.
