2-day International Conference on “Omics for Animal Sciences:Opportunities and Challenges” starts at University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences

LAHORE(UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 20th Feb, 2018 ) : The Institute of Biochemistry & Biotechnology of the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Lahore in collaboration with Punjab Agriculture Research board (PARB) and Higher Education Commission (HEC) Islamabad organised a two-day “International Conference on Omics for Animal Sciences: Opportunities and Challanges” here on Wednesday. Minister for Labour and Human Resources Raja Ashfaq Sarwar presided over the inaugural session of the conference while Vice-Chancellor Meritorious Prof Dr Talat Naseer Pasha, Dean Faculty of Biosciences Prof Dr Habib-ur-Rehman, Director Institute of Biochemistry & Biotechnology Prof Dr Wasim Shehzad and renowned academicians, researchers, biotechnologists from public & private organizations, students related to veterinary & animal sciences, livestock and medical sciences while experts from different countries, including Malaysia, China, India, Brazil, Turkey and all over the Pakistan attended. Speaking on the occasion, Raja Ashfaq Sarwar said that the conference on animal omics is expected to bring important issues to the table to be discussed so that technologies can be devised and suggestion be made to improve the system.

He said that agriculture and livestock are part and parcel of each other and such conferences would be affective for developing strategies and also for the growth of livestock and agriculture sector.

He lauded the UVAS and its leadership for being ranked among top ten universities of Pakistan and its international prestige for its quality of education. He urged the girl students after getting degrees join their respective professions to serve the society and humanity and contribute to the uplift of national economy.

He lauded the UVAS for arranging such an informative conference and gathering national and international experts under one roof to explore new opportunities, discuss various issues, ideas, finding solution, networking and innovative knowledge sharing with each other.

Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Talat Naseer Pasha spoke about the history of UVAS, its faculties, departments and various disease diagnostics facilities, vaccine production, 24/7 clinical & extension services, consultancy and advisory services for the profitability of poor farming community.

He said that UVAS is swiftly achieving the milestones of need-based research, multi-level education and talent development institution by using its knowledge, resources and skills for growth of human resources and solving problems of allied sectors.

He said that recently in Times Higher Education World University Ranking and QS World Top University Ranking, UVAS has been ranked not only among top Asian Universities rather among world university ranking.

He said UVAS mainly focuses on applied research for the enhancement of milk and meat production to meet the growing need of population. He said that with the help of government of the Punjab the university and livestock department recently launched camel milk programme throughout Punjab. Speaking about the conference objectives, Dr Wasim Shahzad said that the conference focuses on learning about the genomics methodologies for improving livestock capabilities, efficient and cost effective protocol for detection of variant in DNA, RNA or protein that can be associated with economically important traits in livestock and conceptual interaction and thoughtful discussion with the livestock genetics and stakeholders etc. Raja Ashfaq Sarwar along with Dr Pasha inaugurated conference and visited poster exhibition and talked to students.

The objective of the conference was the advancement in molecular techniques for improvement of livestock, replacing the previous methodologies. Total five technical sessions and poster presentations will also conducted during the two days event.
