Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) To Set Up A Most Modern Research Repository

Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) is in a process of setting up a most modern repository, that will have a wide-range collection of research journals and theses.
ISLAMABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 24th Jun, 2018 ) :Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) is in a process of setting up a most modern repository, that will have a wide-range collection of research journals and theses.
This is a special initiative taken by the Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Shahid Siddiqui to meet the academic needs of research scholars and students M.Phil and PhD, said a press release issued here on Sunday.
The repository is being developed as a part of extension plan of the University's Central Library.
The students other than the AIOU will have free access to the repository that is to carry the research material both in hard and digital form, said Incharge of the Central Library Muhmmad Umar Khan.
It will comprise special cabins of international standard having the capacity of around forty students at the same time for doing their research work.
The extension wok will be completed without next of couple of months.
The Vice Chancellor has been paying special attention to the development of library's network during the last three and half years, since he believe that it serves as a major source of carrying out research work.
The AIOU as the country's mega institution has been hectically engaged in the recent years to fulfill its basic responsibility of constructing and creating knowledge and disseminating the same to the end users, through research-based activities.
As many as 17 research journals were published and 33 national and international conferences were arranged for this purpose in a short span of time, around three years.
The University's extension plan is also a part of on-going efforts to develop the AIOU as research-based University and to promote research cultural in the country according to socio-economic needs of the society.
Currently, the University's Central as well as regional libraries are well-equipped with modernized and automation system.
In order to encourage reading habit, timing of the library has already been extended, and the now it remains open from 8 am to 7 pm during seven days a week, including Saturday and Sunday.
The books' data of the library has made operational through advanced software system. There is automatic system for circulation of books among the readers. Radio frequency identification system has also been introduced for the safety of the books.
The AIOU's library is first-ever in the country which has scanned around 4,000 theses of PhD, M.Phil, and Masters' level and made available to the students with full text, through online digital system.
Necessary work is also in progress to expand the space of the library to accommodate maximum number of readers. Arrangements have also been made to provide most friendly environment to the readers.
The library has thousands of print and non-print materials to provide academic facilities to the students and teachers.
