Provincial Minister for Primary and Secondary Health and Medical Education, Dr Yasmin Rashid on Monday told Punjab Assembly that the government was setting up five new hospitals in the province.
Funds for establishment of these hospitals, she said, had already been earmarked in the provincial budget 2018-19.
Answering queries by lawmakers during question-hour session in Punjab assembly, the minister said that all-out efforts were being made to provide basic facilities to people at their doorsteps.
The sixth sitting of the current (fifth session) was started with Speaker Pervaiz Elahi in the chair.
The minister said that the government would also take steps for providing people with advanced free-of-cost medical treatment including the life-saving drugs.
She said that a large number of children with multiple diseases were brought to Children's Hospital Lahore and in view of their rising number, more beds were being placed in the wards.
To a question, Dr Yasmin Rashid said that around 28,000 patients were visiting Faisalabad Hospital daily.
She said that establishment of new maternity hospital was on the cards, adding that hospitals would be set up in Mianwalai, Bahawalpur and Rajanpur.
She told a questioner that the poor and destitute people would get adequate health facilities after issuance of health cards in the province.
Coming down hard on previous Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) government, the minister said that more hospitals could have been set up during the last 10 years.
She said that the government hospitals were facing complex issues and the incumbent government was striving to solve them.
Endorsing the health minister, Speaker Punjab Assembly, Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi remarked that mobile health units, introduced by the outgoing PML-N government, could not work anywhere in Punjab, thus wasting the public money.
He asked for special audit of the project, saying all ill practices would surface after the audit.
