The vaccination against the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) with Russian-developed vaccine GamEvac Combi has been completed in Guinea with 2,000 people having received vaccines, The Russian Health Ministry said in a statement on Thursday.

"The Russian Health Ministry and Rusal announced the completion of the vaccination against the EVD in the Republic of Guinea. Around 2,000 people received Gam Evac Combi vaccines in the framework of the post-registration clinical trials, which are being conducted in Guinea by the scientific research institute of epidemiology and microbiology," the statement said.

The Russian vaccine has become the world's first officially registered and approved for clinical application vaccine against Ebola.

According to the statement, it was developed on the instructions of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The vaccine, developed in the Gamaleya Federal Scientific Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology, was introduced in January 2016. The vaccine helps people build up immunity to the virus without serious side effects.

The Ebola virus causes acute infection which affects people and some animal species. The virus has turned into an epidemic in such West African nations as Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia.
