VIENTIANE, Sept. 23 (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 23rd Sep, 2021 ) :Lao Ministry of Health on Thursday recorded 666 local COVID-19 transmissions, the highest daily infection ever reported in the country.
Director General of the Department of Communicable Disease Control under the Lao Ministry of Health Rattanaxay Phetsouvanh told a press conference in Lao capital Vientiane on Thursday that 5,652 tests had been conducted over the past 24 hours, with 694 new cases of COVID-19 confirmed.
He said the new infections included 666 locally transmitted and 28 imported, which altogether brought the country's total tally to 20,646 with 16 deaths.
Among the community cases, 563 were reported in Lao capital Vientiane, 46 in Champasak, 25 in Khammuan, 10 in Savannakhet, five each in Luang Namtha, Bolikhamxay and Luang Prabang, four in Vientiane province, two in Xieng Khuang, and one in Saravan province.
Rattanaxay added that 90 percent of cases recorded in Lao capital Vientiane involved garment factory workers.
Meanwhile, 28 imported cases were recorded, with 13 in Saravan, five in Lao capital Vientiane and Savannakhet, four in Champasak, and one in Khammuan province.
A total of 15,769 COVID-19 patients have recovered and been discharged from hospitals.
Laos reported its first two confirmed COVID-19 cases on March 24 last year.
