Croatia to import nurses as of next year - newspaper

The Croatian government is to determine the annual quota of foreign workers for 2019 by the end of this month, and according to the Vecernji List daily of Monday, the quota is proposed at as many as 63,600 workers.

ZAGREB, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 17th Dec, 2018 ) :The Croatian government is to determine the annual quota of foreign workers for 2019 by the end of this month, and according to the Vecernji List daily of Monday, the quota is proposed at as many as 63,600 workers.

Vecernji List says that Croatia will for the first time import 200 nurses, of whom 50 would work in the healthcare system and 150 in homes for elderly people.

Until now, the social care system has not been affected by a labour shortage, and only five foreign nationals were hired this year as guide dog trainers.

As of next year, as many as 460 foreigners may be hired in this sector.

In addition to nurses and carers, homes for elderly people and for children need cooks, assistant cooks and cleaners. There is also demand for 10 physiotherapists, occupational therapists and social workers, five psychologists and five speech therapists.

The newspaper says that 1,800 nurses have left Croatia this year, mostly for Germany where they earn between 1,800 and 2,000 Euros a month.

"The quota for 2019 is broken down into 41,810 permits for new hiring, 6,540 permits for seasonal work in tourism, agriculture and forestry, 250 permits for transfers within companies, and 15,000 renewed permits," Vecernji List said.

Trade unions are dissatisfied with the government proposal. They say that the competitiveness of the Croatian economy cannot be built on a poorly paid labour force, and that the government is increasing the quota just as wages are starting to increase.

The greatest demand for foreign labour has been registered in the construction industry, which needs as many as 18,500 workers, tourism and hospitality (15,400), agriculture and forestry (3,530), transport (2,314) and the metal industry (2,200), Vecernji List said.
