Lahore, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 26th Nov, 2018 ) 1st bloggers meetup for polio eradication was held in Lahore by the Emergency Operations Centre of Punjab and the World Health Organizationto orient bloggers about the polio eradication initiativein Pakistan and explore avenues of using online platforms to create awareness.

The event was followed by a group work where more than 25 bloggers who came from different parts of Punjab participated in discussions and proposedideas about how EOCs can utilize digital media to achieve polio eradication in Pakistan. Participating bloggers represented diverse spheres including research, medical and fashion, their efforts in spreading the word can be a great catalyst to include this national health emergency in the digital sphere.

Representatives of the WHO and Rotary International also joined the event.

Dr UjalaNayyer from the World Health Organization said, “suboptimal routine immunization, high prevalence of malnutrition and challenges associated with the provision of safe water and sanitation are letting the polio virus to survive and allowing it to paralyze children with low immunity levels.” Pakistan has reported 8 polio cases this year and the virus has been detected from almost all major cities of the country in the sewerage water sample testing for polio.

The event coordination partners Hyba Nawaz Khan said, “We should use all kind of platforms to create awareness about polio eradication and vaccinate the remaining 5% population against polio so that we can make Pakistan polio free.”
