Speaking at a "Public Awareness Session" organised by a Inter Global Human Development Society (IGHDS) here on Tuesday, health experts said remaining healthy was not as much difficult as it is considered by most of the people but in order to remain healthy, people should improve their awareness about health issues.
The tobacco usage in Pakistani society, lack of habit of regular exercise, poor dietary habits and sedentary lifestyle are leading causes of deaths or root-causes of illnesses that result in most of the deaths that could easily be prevented by changing habits.
Dr Shehla Wali reminded the audience that more than 80 women die every day due to too frequent, too many pregnancies and preventable complications during pregnancy. "A dramatic expansion in access to family planning services through the most cost-effective interventions has the potential to avert up to 30 percent of maternal deaths and 10 percent of child deaths," she added.
She also emphasised on women rights to equality and non-discriminatory care as the cornerstone of reproductive health and family planning services. Dr Wali also expressed her reservations against marketing gimmicks and bombardment of advertisements of drugs claiming urgent weight loss and stressed young girls and women are becoming their easy target for their unauthentic products claiming reduction in weight by 20 Pounds in few days which is almost irrational.
While talking about breast cancer prevalence and management, Dr Shumaila said women after age of 40 have higher risk of developing breast cancer, however, now patients with younger age are also being reported.
The participants committed themselves to active engagement of public sector, NGOs, private sector and donors in all matters related to health issues as a key strategy to engage the private sector to complement the government's effort towards the realisation of all national health and population policy goals. Keenjhar Soomro, Maqsood Imam, Sana Khan and others also spoke.
