Legislation for declaring Thalassaemia test before marriage compulsory stressed

Coordinator 'Jehad for Zero Thalassaemia (JZT) NGO' told a special function organised by Pakistan Provincial Services academy (PPSA) Peshawar to distribute hearing aids donated by under training officers of PMS among 35 students with disabilities enabling them to play pro-active role in education and development of the country.

Former Chief Secretary (CS) KP, Abdullah was chief guest on the occasion. Director General PPSA, Nighat Mehrooz, under training PMS, Mid Career and Senior Management Course officers of different provinces, parents and students attended the function.

The Coordinator JZT said Thalassaemia was a blood disorder transmitted mostly from parents to offsprings and pre-marriage test costing only Rs200 was best solution to get rid of this fatal disease.

He said currently about 35,000 to 40,000 patients mostly children are suffering from this disease in KP with an annual increase of 2,000 to 2,500 new cases.

The Coordinator underlined the need for special legislations, constitutions of task force at district level and vigorous campaigns by media, LG representatives and religious scholars to create awareness among masses against this ailment.

The former CS said donation of hearing aids among students suffering from hearing problems was a positive endeavour of PPSA officers.

He called for joint efforts to create awareness against this fatal disease.

Special children have a lot of potential to excel in education viz a viz play role in the country's development and provision of such free of cost facilities would provide them great relief in accomplishment of their future endeavours, he said.

Abdulah said,"today's event has showed Pakistan is in safe hands. The nation has great expectations from officers to take quick decisions for resolution of their problems, progress and development of the country." Director General PPSA, Nighat Mehroz said the idea of donation of hearing aids was conceived by a group of PMS officers during their professional training imparted in dealing with issues of persons with disabilities in fields.

The idea was later fully supported by other PMS officers, Mid Career and Senior Management Career officers of different provinces here by donating money for it.

She urged media to highlight issues of such segment of the society and welfare functions on regular basis so that society could be sensitized and cogent measures could be taken for its solutions.

She said such children needed our full attention and constant support.

Later, the students through dramas and tableaus highlighted the causes of disease and its worst effects on human lives, which were warmly applauded.
