The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences, a leading public sector university, has started managing oral cancer of all stages in its teaching hospital.
Chairman Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Dr Kashif Ali Channar while talking to APP here on Monday said that the department which established in the tenure of Late Professor Dr Abdul Qadir Khero and Professor Dr Essa Arain in 1984 had succeeded to achieve this milestone.
The maxillofacial surgeons are rarely available in public sector setups, said Dr. Channar, adding that after Karachi, the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department LUMHS is the second most busy and caring in providing services to affected patients.
Dr. Kashif Ali Channar further informed that the department is providing the updated and evidence based management to patients suffering from oral Cancer, precancerous conditions, traumatized patients, having different pathologies of head and neck.
The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery was not known to people earlier but its popularity is increasing day by day because number of patients are being reported with facial trauma due to road traffic accidents, fall and interpersonal violence, this is the only department covering huge population providing its services to the poor and needy patients, said Dr. Channar.
Initially, he informed that the department was focusing on management of traumatic patients only, the rest of pathological cases were referred to Karachi but at present all type of oral cancers, premalignant lesions, traumatic patients with facial fractures, pathological lesions and reconstructive procedures are being carried out by expert maxillofacial surgeons.
Dr. Channar on the occasion emphasized the need for imposing ban on all types of smokeless and smoked tobacco which, he said, are the main causes of oral cancer, adding, oral cancer is top most occurring disease in middle East and Asia especially in Sindh.
Early detection of oral cancer is directly proportional to outcome of disease but unfortunately they receive patients in stage IV, he said and added, at initial stage cancer is painless and secondly many medical practitioner, as they fail to diagnose oral cancer, treat it as infection.
So, he stated people could reach them at last stage.
Lack of qualified medical dental personnel is another reason for late diagnosis, he said.
The treatment of oral cancer required team of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons, Anesthesiologist, ENT Surgeons, Medical Oncologist, he shared.
The department consultants routinely visit the NIMRA Cancer Hospital for checking the patients of oral cancer, he said and informed that he started this practice in 2010 with Prof. Noor Ahmed Khoso and Director of Nimra, Dr. Naeem Lagari.
The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery also provides training services to postgraduate students of M.Sc and FCPS, he said and informed that currently 27 MSc trainee and 28 FCPS residents are serving and learning in the department.
Our trainees and residents also conduct research in the field of surgery, he said and added that the department had provided many qualified maxillofacial surgeons who were serving in different rural and urban areas of Sindh.
