KARACHI, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 19th Apr, 2019 ) :National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) here on Friday opened its 9th chest pain unit (CPU) to help provide immediate medical assistance to commuters in particular and public in general exposed to heart attack or related conditions.

Media Advisor to Sindh Chief Minister, Barrister Murtaza Wahab inaugurated the facility established beneath the Karimabad fly- over, one of the most frequented sites in Karachi Central.

Talking to media men, he said public health facilities have to be beyond politics and must be accessible to all without any distinction.

PPP, he said firmly believes in public service and therefore was making an all out effort to turn healthcare as well as educational institutions up to the mark.

"We consider health and education as the essential component of human rights", he said.

Executive Director, NICVD, Professor Nadeem Qamar said CPUs were basically meant to provide first tier of heart care facilities to the people at their doorstep.

Mentioning that eight CPUs already functional in different parts of the city have provided needed medical support to more than 200,000 patients since May last year, he said CPUs were functionally designed to provide preliminary emergency care to heart attack patients.

"After being provided with initial treatment, the patients in need are shifted immediately to the tertiary care setup at NICVD Cath Lab," he said.

Prof Nadeem Qamar said a chain of CPUs was needed for the ever expanding metropolis and that eight more would be established in near future bringing the total to 17.

Each of these CPUs were said to be well-equipped with appropriate diagnostic facilities along with efficient arrangements to resuscitate patients who may arrive in unstable condition, he said.

He said the idea was not only to provide needed assistance to the complainants but also screen those with serious conditions and in need of immediate medical intervention.

Prof Nadeem Qamar mentioned that NICVD was also actively engaged in setting up satellite centres along with CPUs in the interior parts of the province to help patients acquired needed medical assistance at their doorstep.
