People Avail Opportunity To Get Screened For Diabetes

People in Karachi are increasingly getting conscious about their vulnerability to "Diabetes," as reflected through sizable presence at special screening camps organized by Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) here on Monday.
SIUT officials talking to APP said the fact that diabetes has emerged as the major underlying factor for renal or kidney failure in the country has made it necessary for people to undergo regular examination.
Under the special arrangements to mark World Diabetes Day 2018 with the theme "Family and Diabetes," people, pertaining to all age groups, were examined at the stalls manned by qualified professionals.
They were not only screened absolutely free of charge but were also apprised of different aspects of the disorder and related management as maintaining a good glycemic control; intake of a healthy diet, followed by exercise; foot care, eye and gums care along with importance of regular check up.
Citizens were further registered to discuss the subject itself, on individual basis with particular focus on associated complications with seasoned medical professionals, including diabetologists, cardiologists, ophthalmologists, nephrologists and dental surgeons.
Presence of nutritionists and dieticians at these session, educating people, in the simplest terms about the urgent need to revert back to simple dietary habits and to shun fast food culture as well as growing preference for processed food was perhaps taken with a pinch of salt by many.
Experts addressing a symposium on the occasion made detailed presentations about the prevalence of Diabetes in Pakistan and across the globe.
Warning that "Diabetes" was rising at a rapid pace internationally and nationally, they said an estimated number of 415 million people were suffering from diabetes worldwide.
The figure was said to constitute 10.7% of the adult population and that it is feared to rise to 642 million, or 11.1% by 2040 if no interventions are made.
In context of Pakistan, the country was said to be faced with grim future as in the absence of needed interventions the current number of 10 million diabetics may increase to approximately 14.4 million by 2040.
