Psychiatrists Stress Upon The Adequate Psychiatric Treatment

Eminent Psychiatrists stressed the need for extending the infrastructure to provide adequate psychiatric treatment to the ailing people and also for launching mental health services and awareness campaign in the country to overcome sociological and medical causes causing such conditions.
HYDERABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 9th Oct, 2018 ) :Eminent Psychiatrists stressed the need for extending the infrastructure to provide adequate psychiatric treatment to the ailing people and also for launching mental health services and awareness campaign in the country to overcome sociological and medical causes causing such conditions.
Psychiatrists shared their views with APP here on Tuesday, in connection with the World Mental Health Day to be observed tomorrow(10 October).
The world mental health day observed on October 10, every year and this year's theme is ''Young People and Mental Health in a changing world".
Eminent consultant Psychiatrists and Medical Superintendent of Sir Cowasjee Jehangir Institute of Psychiatry (C J Institute) Hyderabad, Dr.Rehana Pathan said that the world is focusing and fighting with five major diseases and mental health is one of them but unfortunately neither from government side nor from public itself paying heed towards mentally ill patients.
She said that due to lack of awareness, people with psychological and emotional problems often visited faith healers, spiritual leaders, homeopathic doctors, magicians and hakims only to be abused by them.
She highlighted the purpose of celebrating this day is to raise public awareness about importance of mental health, stigma attached and barriers to access mental health service and strengthen support networks.
Dr. Rehana further said that persistent depression has emerged to be one of the risk factors for strokes, heart attacks and failure and arterial aneurysm and also a leading source of chronic renal failure.
Professor and Chairman Department of Psychiatry Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences (LUMHS), Psychiatrist Dr.Moin Ansari said depression is more than just feeling down. It is a serious illness caused by changes in brain chemistry,added.
Psychiatrist Dr.Moin Ansari said that in order to prevent depression and mental health diseases in the country at least one psychiatric unit should be established in every district to provide treatment and also to create awareness among the people, added.
He further said that there were many factors contributed to high rates of mental health problems in Pakistan.
The inter-family marriages, high rates of birth injuries, economic decline, growing unemployment and rapidly changing cultural and social values are some of the causes, Psychiatrist Moin Ansari added.
Chief medical officer Sir Cowasjee Institute ,Professor Dr. Azhar Iqbal Memon further said the number of patients suffering from mental diseases was on rise as compared to past and there be need of making serious efforts to prevent the diseases at the initial stages, added.
In order to prevent depression and psychiatric diseases in the country, he added that the medical treatment, rehabilitation of the patients should also be started by establishing vocational institute within psychiatry institute.
Dr.Azhar Iqbal Memon said that after having been the stillness to earn their livelihood at own, no patient would be ignored or disowned by their parents.
He said human being from each segment of the society or group is important as others are. He said any service to the human being was the service of the nation and country and we must continue the same for the sake of our country.
Eminent Psychiatrist Dr.Zahida Batool said that the most important cause for psychiatric conditions was abnormality of neurotransmitters which could be treated through medication.
She said that the mental illnesses is common to countries of all sort and people with these disorders are often subjected to social isolation, poor quality of life and increased death rates involving suicides.
Dr.Zahida Batool also said that increasing depression among the people is causing changing behavior resulting different kinds of mental diseases among them.
She also urged for at least one psychiatric unit in each district of the country in order to provide adequate treatment to the concerned patients.
She underlined the need of creating mass awareness about in depth causes of increasing mental illness that the adults could be aware of the real facts and adopt precautionary measures in order to save their lives as well as future generation.
