University Of Sargodha Holds Seminar, Walk To Create Awareness About Thalassemia

Every year, 5,000 babies are born with thalassemia due to an inherited blood disorder in which the body makes an abnormal form of hemoglobin.
SARGODHA, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 21st Mar, 2018 ) :Every year, 5,000 babies are born with thalassemia due to an inherited blood disorder in which the body makes an abnormal form of hemoglobin.
However, the spread of deadly disease in the country could be controlled through blood screening before marriage, said speakers at the one-day awareness seminar on thalassemia held at the University of Sargodha (UOS).
The seminar was jointly organised by Blood Donor and Give Life Society, University of Sargodha and Patient Care Blood Donor Society Sargodha Medical College. UoS Vice Chancellor Dr Ishtiaq Ahmad, Deputy Commissioner Sargodha Liaquat Ali Chatha, Member Thalassemia Federation of Pakistan Dr Adil, Project Director Punjab Thalassemia Protection Programme Dr Shabnam Bashir, Principal Sargodha Medical College Prof Dr Humair Akram, Dean Faculty of Arts and Law Dr Nawaz Mehsud, faculty members, students, patients and their families, and people from all walks of life attended the seminar.
An awareness walk was also held in this regard, which was led by Vice Chancellor Dr Ishtiaq Ahmad. Speaking on the occasion, the VC said that being a human being, it's our duty to make efforts to control the spread of deadly diseases like thalassemia.
Deputy Commissioner Sargodha Liaquat Ali Chatha informed the seminar participants that a thalassemia ward had already been established in the District Headquarters Hospital (DHQ) Sargodha. However, other necessary measure would also be taken to control the spread of the disease.
Member Thalassemia Federation of Pakistan Dr Adil said the disease is caused by either a genetic mutation or a deletion of certain key gene fragments. Project Director Dr Shabnam Bashir said that under the Punjab Thalassemia Protection Programme, 60,000 patients of major thalassemia had been registered, while awareness campaigns were being run in 36 districts of Punjab.
