NEW DELHI (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 24th May, 2019) Indian security forces have killed the leader of an al-Qaeda- (terrorist group banned in Russia) affiliated militant cell operating in the state of Jammu and Kashmir and responsible for a series of attacks in the region, local media reported on Friday, citing sources.
The militant, known as Zakir Musa, was killed in a large-scale operation conducted by police on Thursday in the south of Jammu and Kashmir, the ANI news agency reported.
Late on Thursday, police cordoned off one of the neighborhoods in the city of Srinagar, where Musa and his henchmen were hiding.
Police tried to persuade the militants to surrender but they instead started throwing grenades and opened fire at police forces, which resulted in an exchange of fire, a source told ANI.
Zakir Musa, whose real name is Zakir Rashid Bhat, has long been considered one of the most dangerous and wanted terrorists in India.
