DAKKA, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News / WAM - 24th Mar, 2019) Refugee camps in Bangladesh will see several support services underway to help improve Rohingya living conditions. The Emirates Red Crescent, ERC, announced on Sunday that it began relief operations to improve sanitation and access to potable water, as well as adequate medical care.
An ERC delegation led by Dr. Mohammed Ateeq Al Falahi, Secretary-General of the ERC, accompanied by Saed Mohammed Al Muhairi, UAE Ambassador to Bangladesh, launched the projects, in the presence of Bangladeshi government officials and representatives of international humanitarian organisations operating inside the camps. The delegation also distributed humanitarian aid to the refugees.
Al Falahi said that the projects are part of the UAE’s humanitarian response plans to support Rohingya refugees, as per the directives of the UAE leadership and the monitoring of H.
H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler's Representative in Al Dhafra Region and Chairman of the ERC.
"The ERC was among the first humanitarian organisations to respond to the needs of Rohingya refugees at the start of the crisis, especially in Cox’s Bazar, in light of the scarcity of relief materials and basic supplies. The ERC organised a three-stage plan to provide urgent aid to refugees, including hundreds of tonnes of food parcels, shelter materials, cleaning supplies and clothes, which benefitted hundreds of thousands of refugees," he added.
According to UNOCHA, the Rohingya refugee crisis is the fastest growing in the world, with the concentration of refugees in Cox’s Bazar is now amongst the densest in the world. The Inter-Sector Coordination Group, ISCG, reported over 900,000 Rohingya refugees were in Cox's Bazar at the end of February 2019.
