FNC Parliamentary Division highlights role of parliaments in developing global trade legislation

The Federal National Council, FNC, Parliamentary Division highlighted the importance of the role of parliaments in developing legislations, laws and national practices that will help in the implementation of international trade procedures.

GENEVA, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News / WAM - 10th Dec, 2018) The Federal National Council, FNC, Parliamentary Division highlighted the importance of the role of parliaments in developing legislations, laws and national practices that will help in the implementation of international trade procedures.

Such trade procedures, especially those stated in various international conventions, must be reflected in national policies, programmes and legislations.

This statement is part of a speech by Salem Abdullah Al Shamsi, FNC Member, during the delegation’s participation in an annual parliamentary conference, which was organised by the World Trade Organisation, WTO, and was held at its headquarters in Geneva on Saturday, in cooperation with the Inter-Parliamentary Union, IPU, and the European Parliament, under the title, 'The WTO: The Way Forward'.

Al Shamsi addressed the issue of how to benefit from technological developments, especially from information and communication technologies related to handling local and international goods, services, capital, information and human resources while stressing the importance of adopting international laws that are in line with global advances, such as the digital economy, which will play a crucial role in global trade, reduce costs and increase productivity.

He also highlighted the importance of the participation of parliaments in the trade negotiations between WTO member countries.

The division stressed the importance of the flexibility of governments in adopting the best smart and innovative practices, through investing in new technologies and systems, as well as the importance of investing in the renewable and alternative energy sector, to benefit from the sector and protect the environment.

It also highlighted the importance of reviewing legislation and laws related to intellectual property rights, information flows and privacy to ensure competitiveness, as well as to involve the youth in the activities of the organisation, prepare them to be future leaders, raise their awareness about their potential economic challenges, and encourage them to help draft relevant public policies and contribute to the discussions related to economic policies.
