Fujairah CP Receives Wadi Wurayah UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Certificate

FUJAIRAH, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News / WAM - 26th Feb, 2019) H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, Crown Prince of Fujairah, has received the Wadi Wurayah UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Certificate awarded by the World Network of Biosphere Reserves,WNBR, in July 2018. The Fujairah nature spot was one of 24 sites to win the seal of approval, which recognises protected areas that demonstrate a balanced relationship between people and nature, and encourage sustainable development.
Mohamed Saif Al Afkham, Director-General of Fujairah Municipality, presented the world prestigious accolade to the Crown Prince of Fujairah, during a meeting at the Royal Court.
Located within the Hajar mountain range in Fujairah, Wadi Wurayah was declared the first Mountain Protected Area in the UAE in 2009 and became the second UAE site to win the coveted UNESCO status.
Sheikh Mohammed Al Sharqi commended the management of the Wadi Wurayah National Park for the strict measures and tireless efforts it has taken to preserve and safeguard the indigenous heritage, environment, wildlife and natural resources.
Al Afkham said the nature reserve would not have secured this status without the constant support from H.
H. Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Fujairah, and the sound directives and direct follow up by the crown prince.
Situated in the Emirate of Fujairah, the biosphere reserve consists of a water catchment area in an arid climate that is part of the Hajar mountain range. The site hosts a rich fauna and flora endemic to the Arabian Peninsula. It is one of the last Emirati places where traditional farming practices are still maintained.

The wadi is home to 81 bird species, 20 mammal species, at least nine reptile and amphibian species and 467 invertebrate species .
The UAE has not had a new UNESCO Biosphere Reserve designation since 2007, when Marawah in Abu Dhabi joined the internationally recognised list.
