Report: UAE, UN reinforce international security, stability

ABU DHABI, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News / WAM - 25th Sep, 2018) The UAE has created, through its support for relevant United Nations agencies and organisations, a unique model of serving the UN’s goals and its efforts to promote diplomatic action, through specialist Emirati agencies and organisations.

During its participation in the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly, which is being held from 18th September to 1st October 2018, in New York, the UAE confirmed its support for the UN and highlighted their cooperation, especially in maintaining international security and stability and promoting tolerance and dialogue between communities.

Since joining the UN on 9th December 1971, the UAE has keenly supported the organisation’s activities, in light of its belief in the importance of promoting the UN Charter and international laws, and in the role of the UN in improving international relations and achieving sustainable development.

The UAE is a member of specialist UN organisations, such as the World Health Organisation, WHO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, UNESCO, and the United Nations Children's Fund, UNICEF.

On 7th December 2017, the UAE obtained membership to three UNESCO committees, due to its role in developing the working mechanisms of the international organisation and its committees.

The UAE has also signed cooperation agreements with over 28 UN international organisations and has hosted many UN regional offices, such as those of the United Nations Development Programme, UNDP and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, UNHCR.

The UAE also provides free office space and financial contributions to UN agencies and non-governmental organisations in the World Humanitarian City in Dubai, and has successfully cooperated with the UN and supported many UN agencies in 2018, including by providing AED1.84 billion, or US$500 million, to assist the UN’s humanitarian response plan for Yemen during the same year.

The UAE also donated, in 2018, an addition $50 million to support the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, UNRWA.

In September 2017, the UAE announced its plan to provide two financial aid packages to the UN, with the first for the UNRWA amounting to $15 million while the second for the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, UN Women, is worth $15 million over three years.

The UAE also provided $8.324 million to support the funds and programme of the UNDP in 2016.
