UAE Has Leading Peaceful Nuclear Energy Programme: INLA Secretary-General
ABU DHABI, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News / WAM - 04th Nov, 2018) The UAE is home to one of the world’s leading peaceful nuclear energy programmes, said Patrick Reyners, Secretary-General of the International Nuclear Law Association, INLA, while noting that the country’s coordinated efforts are unique, and the achievements of the Barakah Nuclear Plant are impressive.
In a statement to the Emirates news Agency, WAM, on the sidelines of the 23rd Nuclear Inter Jura 2018, currently being held in Abu Dhabi, Reyners added that the UAE’s peaceful nuclear programme is comprehensive and will help support its economic and social development, as well as provide safe and environmentally-friendly nuclear energy.
"The progress of this programme, since its inception a little more than tens years ago, has been spectacular, and we look forward to the commissioning of the first reactor," the INLA Secretary-General enthused.
Commenting on why the conference is taking place in the nation's capital, Reyner said the bi-annual conference signals the importance given by the INLA community of nuclear law specialists to the progress of the nuclear energy programme in Abu Dhabi.
He noted that the conference will feature many specialists in legal affairs, as well as government representatives, executive officials and nuclear energy experts from around the world, who came to discuss a range of topics that include international agreements, nuclear responsibility, nuclear fuel cycles, building new nuclear power plants, sustainable development and international safeguards.
Reyners explained that the INLA is an international non-profit association that was established in December 1970 in Brussels, with some 650 members from around the world. The association has held conferences in 20 countries since 1973, as it seeks to reinforce the relationships between legal experts with interests in nuclear law, encourage research and development, and promote cooperation in this area.
The conference, which was organised by the INLA and is being hosted by Abu Dhabi for the first time in the Middle East, in partnership with local and international authorities including the Federal Nuclear Regulatory Authority and Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation, will end on 8th November.
