NEW YORK, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News / WAM - 20th Sep, 2018) In his message for the International Day of Peace, Ant?nio Guterres, the UN Secretary-General, urged the international community to act together to promote and defend human rights for all, in the name of lasting peace for all.
Each year the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on 21st September. The General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples. The 2018 Theme: "The Right to Peace - The Universal Declaration of Human Rights at 70".
''This year we mark International Day of Peace as we prepare to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This foundational document is a reminder that peace takes root when people are free from hunger, poverty and oppression and can thrive and prosper,'' he said in his message on the eve of the celebration.
''With the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as our guide, we must ensure the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.'' ''I encourage you to speak up. For gender equality. For inclusive societies. For climate action. Do your part at school, at work, at home. Every step counts.
Let us act together to promote and defend human rights for all, in the name of lasting peace for all,''he stated.
The secretary-general will celebrate the International Day of Peace in the Peace Garden at United Nations Headquarters by ringing the Peace Bell and observing a minute of silence.
The International Day of Peace was established in 1981 by the United Nations General Assembly.
Two decades later, in 2001, the General Assembly unanimously voted to designate the Day as a period of non-violence and cease-fire.
The United Nations invites all nations and people to honour a cessation of hostilities during the Day, and to otherwise commemorate the Day through education and public awareness on issues related to peace.
Sustainable Development Goal 16 "Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions" calls for promoting peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, providing access to justice for all and building effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels.
A peaceful society is one where there is justice and equality for everyone. Peace will enable a sustainable environment to take shape and a sustainable environment will help promote peace.
