UNESCO commends UAE's role in safeguarding intangible heritage

A UNESCO official has affirmed that the UAE continues to be a key partner of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation in the field of preserving cultural heritage

KHARTOUM, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News / WAM - 22nd Feb, 2019) A UNESCO official has affirmed that the UAE continues to be a key partner of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation in the field of preserving cultural heritage.

Head of the UNESCO Office in Sudan, Pavel Kroupkine, made the remarks, as he addressed a ceremony organised by the international organisation to observe the International Year of Indigenous Languages. The function falls in line with a project funded by the Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi and carried out by the UNESCO office here, to strengthen national capacities for safeguarding intangible cultural heritage in Sudan.

The international official hailed the UAE's genuine interest in preserving cultural heritage through the project, which started in September in Sudan through a series of workshops to build and strengthen national capacities for the noble cause.

"Sudan is noted for its rich history and intangible heritage," said UAE Ambassador to Sudan, Hamad Mohamed Al Junaibi, who attended the ceremony and underlined the importance of growing interest in Arabic as an indigenous language to safeguard intangible heritage.

The Sudanese Minister of State at the Ministry of Culture, Tourism & Antiquities, Dr. Sumaya Idris Osman Ukud, who attended the function as well, lauded the significant support provided by the UAE leadership to the UNESCO programmes in general and those in Sudan in particular.

The United Nations declared 2019 The Year of Indigenous Languages in order to raise awareness of them, not only to benefit the people who speak these languages, but also for others to appreciate the important contribution they make to our world’s rich cultural diversity.
