University of Sharjah inaugurates Health Awareness Exhibition

SHARJAH, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News / WAM - 04th Nov, 2018) Elsiddig Ahmed ElMustafa El Sheikh, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at the University of Sharjah, opened the health awareness exhibition, 'Stay Healthy', organised by the Dean of Female Students’ Affairs at the University and spanning three days.

In attendance at the opening were Dr. Salama Al Rahoomi, Dean of Female Students’ Affairs, as well as a number of faculty, staff members and students.

The exhibition aims to strengthen cooperation between the University of Sharjah, governmental and private health care institutions in the community. It seeks to offer health care education by informing students and the community of the services these institutions offer, and to educate them about a number of illnesses, including angina, breast and colon cancer, along with sodium intake and its consequences. The exhibition also raises awareness about maintaining a healthy weight and blood levels, and how to follow a healthy lifestyle.

A number of governmental and private bodies participated in the exhibition, including the Sharjah Medical District; the Health Education Department at the Supreme Council for Family Affairs; and a number of societies, such as the Breastfeeding Friends, Diabetes Friends, Friends of Arthritis Patients, and Kidney Friends.

The Red Crescent Society of the United Arab Emirates – Local Aid Section – also participated.

As part of the exhibition, Counselor Aisha Al Motawa conducted a workshop, entitled 'Anxiety Management'. The aim of the workshop was to demonstrate the use of anxiety-management techniques, such as cognitive behavioural therapy, to balance ideas and determine their validity. The workshop also aimed at gaining the basic skills necessary for proper studying and increasing self-confidence. Dr. Sumaia Al Shamaileh, Counselor at the Deanship, also conducted a workshop, entitled 'Psychological First Aid', during which she explored stress coping skills, as well as some exercises for muscle relaxation and deep breathing techniques, aided by inspirational positive thinking.

The Female Students’ Council, in collaboration with the Friends of Cancer Patients Society - Pink Caravan, also organised an event for pink month entitled, 'You are the Life'.

Dr. Noura Salem Salman from the Pink Caravan presented breast cancer preventative measures through early detection and periodic self-examinations. This is in addition to offering advice and tips, as well as conducting tests for students and staff members. The session also included writing encouraging messages to women with breast cancer.
