ABU DHABI, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News / WAM - 23rd Mar, 2019) The Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan Charitable and Humanitarian Foundation announced that it has spent over AED51 million to fund the digging of 238 water wells in 12 countries since it was established in 1992, as part of its humanitarian mission to enable communities to have access to the key source of life.

Hamad Salem bin Kardous Al Ameri, Director-General of the foundation, said the water projects included 77 wells in Niger, 50 in Sudan, 16 each in Mali and Somalia, 10 each in Kenya and Chad, 8 each in Ethiopia and Djibouti, 7 in Mauritania and 6 each in Oman and Yemen.

''Provision of water to present and future generations in countries suffering a scarcity of water is one of the foundation's key areas of interest,'' he stated.

He said rationalisation of water consumption is a top priority for the UAE Water Security Strategy 2036, which aims to ensure sustainable access to water during both normal and emergency conditions in line with local regulations, standards of the World Health Organisation, and the UAE’s vision to achieve prosperity and sustainability.

He called for reviewing the consumption patterns of water and finding innovative, sustainable solutions to the scarcity of fresh water in arid regions, especially in Arab countries, funding water research, analysing challenges facing the water sector and future global demand.

Observed on 22nd March every year, the theme for World Water Day 2019 is "Leaving no one behind". This is an adaptation of the central promise of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development: as sustainable development progresses, everyone must benefit.
