US Hopes For Good, Strong Bilateral Relations Between Pakistan, India: US State Department

WASHINGTON, Sept.20 (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 21st Sep, 2018 ) :The US State Department Spokesperson on Thursday expressed the hope for strong bilateral relations between Pakistan and India amid reports that their foreign ministers would meet on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly meeting in New York later this month.

Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi and his Indian counterpart Sushma Swaraj would be in New York to attend the UN General Assembly meeting.

Media reports, quoting the spokesman of the Indian External Affairs Minister, said that the two top diplomats of their respective countries would meet on the sidelines of the UN meeting, but did not provide any date. Pakistans Foreign Ministry have not yet said anything about the reported meeting.

When asked to comment on the media reports, US State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert welcomed the reports about the meeting and about the positive messages between the leaders of the two countries.

I think thats terrific news for the Indians and Pakistanis to be able to sit down and have a conversation together, she said when asked for comments on the reported meeting and also referred to the reports about the positive messages being exchanged between Prime Minister Imran Khan and his Indian counterpart.

We hope that the conditions will be set for good, strong relationship, a good, strong bilateral relationship in the future, the spokesperson said. If meeting held , this would be a first high-level meeting between the two countries in years.
