5th Death Anniversary 'Nelson Mandela' Observed

The 5th death anniversary of anti-apartheid revolutionary, political leader Nelson Mandela was observed today (Wednesday).

On December 5, 2013, Nelson Mandela, the first President of South Africa to be elected in a fully representative democratic election, as well as the country's first black head of state, died at the age of 95 after suffering from a prolonged respiratory infection.

Mandela, also known by his clan name of Madiba, spent 27 years in prison for fighting white-minority rule in South Africa.

Mandela, along with other leaders opposing apartheid, was sentenced to life on charges of sabotage in 1964 and he spent 27 years in jail and was released in 1990, private news channel reported.

He won the 1993 Nobel Peace prize for "peaceful termination of the apartheid regime and for laying the foundations for a new democratic South Africa".
