71st Independence Day of Pakistan was celebrated here on Tuesday with full zeal and enthusiasm amid tight security arrangements as 2000 cops were deployed in the city.

The main flag hoisting ceremony of Rawalpindi Division was held here at the auditorium of Rawalpindi Arts Council (RAC) to mark the Independence Day where ADC to Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Col (R) Zahoor Akhtar Kiyani was the chief guest.

Commissioner Rawalpindi Division Caption (R) Saif Anjum, Mayor Rawalpindi Sardar Naseem, Regional Police Officer Rawalpindi Fayyaz Ahmed, Deputy Commissioner Dr Umer Jahangir, Additional Commissioner Tariq Salam Marwat, City Police Officer Abbas Ahsan and Resident Director RAC Waqar Ahmed attended the ceremony as the special guests.

The ceremony was also attended by district and police officers, notables, members of Christian and Sikh communities, eunuchs, school children and the people belonging to various walks of life.

Another flag hoisting ceremony was held at the Lahore High Court (LHC), Rawalpindi Bench to mark the Independence Day of Pakistan. Senior Judge LHC, Ibad ur Rehman Lodhi and Justice Mirza Waqas Rauf hoisted the national flag.

A contingent of the Punjab Police presented the guard of honor.

On the occasion, LHC judges, a large number of lawyers and children were present.

Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation celebrated the Independence Day by organizing a Flag Hoisting Ceremony at Flashman's Hotel where General Manager, (GM) Pakistan Tourism Ali Akbar Malik was the Chief Guest. The Hotel was beautifully decorated with banners, colorful flags, balloons and buntings.

A ceremony was held at the Rawalpindi Chamber of Commerce and Industry in connection with the Independence Day where the national flag was hoisted by RCCI President Zahid Latif Khan.

Senior Vice President Muhammad Nasir Mirza, Vice President Khalid Farooq Qazi, former president Sohail Altaf, members of the executive committee and a large number of traders attended the ceremony.

Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) organized a flag hoisting ceremony here at ANF headquarters to celebrate the 71st Independence Day of Pakistan with full enthusiasm.

The ceremony was attended by the Officers and Officials of Anti Narcotics Force.

The message of the Chief of Army Staff was also read out on the occasion.

A flag hoisting and cake cutting ceremony was organized by district police at Police Lines, Headquarters.

SP Headquarters Ali Raza hoisted the national flag.

Fatima Jinnah Women University (FJWU) celebrated the National Independence Day with great zeal and organized a flag hoisting ceremony. Vice Chancellor, FJWU, Prof. Dr Samina Amin Qadir was chief guest on the occasion.

Pir Mehr Ali Shah- Arid Agriculture University Rawalpindi also organized a program to celebrate the day.

The Vice Chancellor (VC) PMAS-AAUR, Prof. Dr Sarwat N Mirza, Registrar Muhammad Aqeel Sultan, deans of faculties, administrative officers and employees attended the ceremony.

Famous Ghazal singer Munni Begum mesmerized the audience at Rawalpindi Arts Council on Monday night and received standing ovation from the listeners. The night was arranged in connection with Independence Day celebrations.

The acclaimed singer kept the audience spellbound by singing her popular ghazals like 'Jhoom Barabar Jhoom Sharabi, Ek Bar Muskura Do, Tumhare Sheher Ka Mausam Bada Suhana Lage, Idhar Zindagi Ka Janaza Uthey Ga' and others.

Elaborate security arrangements were made and around 500 police personnel were also deployed in Murree which was thronged by thousands of visitors from across the country.

The Rawalpindi city's security arrangements were also supported by members of the police Elite Force, women police officers and officials from the special branch.

Special police pickets were also set up for snap checking and for the foolproof security in sensitive areas.

Pickets were also set up at the entry and exit points of the city. Police officers were deputed on parks and main spots in the city.

Police, Elite Force, Muhafiz Squads and Dolphin Force patrolling was enhanced in several areas to net the criminals.

Murree was divided into two sectors and special pickets were set up there. SP Sadar Division supervised overall security arrangements in Murree.

Rawalpindi City Traffic Police chalked out a comprehensive plan for the Independence day while special arrangements were made to control one-wheeling and car-skating.

Under the traffic plan, enhanced number of traffic wardens under the supervision of Inspectors and DSPs were deployed in double shifts in Rawalpindi city and tehsils of the district aimed at avoiding traffic mess on the Independence Day.

The CTO told that all out efforts were made by Traffic Police to facilitate the road users so that they could get uninterrupted traffic flow and reach at their destination within shortest possible time.

The preparations to mark the Independence Day was started in the city with the start of August.

Large stalls of national flag and bounties were established at different roads, streets and markets. The main roads of the city were decorated with national flags, banners containing patriotic slogans with addition of the picture of national leaders.

The printers and makers of buntings, flags, banners and badges were fully engaged in their business.

The most enthusiastic were children who were busy collecting stickers, badges and also beautifying their bicycles with special stickers inscribed with messages of Independence Day. The Makers of buntings, flags, banners and badges were working round the clock to meet demand as well as supplying to other adjoining areas of the city.

Special seminars, sports competitions, literary and social activities were organized to commemorate the Independence Day.

A number of stalls of buntings, flags, badges and other items were established in all main city markets including Tench Bhatta, Lalkurti, Saddar Bazaar, Raja Bazaar, urdu Bazaar, Benazir Bhutto Road, Buni Market, Rehmandabad, Sadiqabad, Commercial Market and other areas of the city.

The Independence day dawned with special prayers in mosques for the integrity, solidarity and development of Pakistan.

The day was celebrated across the division like other parts of the country with flag raising ceremonies, tributes to the national heroes and fireworks took place particularly on Aug 13 night.

National songs were in the air which gave the message that whole the nation is united. The national flags were hoisted at the important buildings to celebrate the day with befitting manner. Special prizes on this occasion were awarded to those who decorated and illuminated their buildings beautifully. The educational institutions also organized special programmes to mark the Independence Day.

A 'Jashan-e-Azadi' walk 'Salam Pakistan' was organized here the other day in connection with the Independence Day celebrations under the auspices of Rawalpindi Arts Council (RAC).

The RAC announced to celebrate independence festivities throughout the month of August for apprising the young generation of the importance and significance of independence and the different aspects of Pakistan Movement.

A Group Painting Exhibition "Beautiful Pakistan" was also kicked off at RAC to mark Independence Day with zeal and zest. The exhibition featuring landscape of Pakistan was comprised on more than 100 art pieces while most of them are oil on canvas. More than 30 artists participated in the exhibition. An exhibition of rare photographs based on Pakistan Movement was also kicked off under auspices of RAC.

The exhibition containing more than 100 photographs from 1857 to 1948 was put on display at RAC Art Gallery.

The Council also arrangeda Musical Gala on Aug 14 while a three-day 'Jashan-e-Azadi' Mela was kicked offon Aug 12.
