ISLAMABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 08th Dec, 2017 ) :Chairperson National Commission for Human Development (NCHD) Razina Alam Khan said December 10 was commemorated as Universal Human Rights Day (UHRD) annually with an aim to strive progressively for securing and providing the individuals and societies with every right for their survival and recognition.

The biggest human right was access to education and literacy, she said while addressing the educationists of NCHD in a meeting held in connection with UHRD here Friday, says a press release. Chairperson NCHD said that in order to fight for one's right it is necessary that one should be acquainted to it, but unfortunately 40% of our adults belonging to remote areas of Pakistan were illiterates and mostly unaware of their rights.

Education was the only way to create awareness among these masses to make them familiar about their rights as an individual at every stage of their lives, she maintained. Education and literacy created real empowerment, she added.

Literacy was considered as an essential pre-requisite for the acquisition and dissemination of knowledge, she stated. Education provided building blocks for raising the quality and standard of life of people and opened up avenues of access to knowledge, she stressed.

NCHD under Federal Ministry of Education and Technical Trainings along with other stakeholders was working with a mission to promote human development by improving literacy in the country, she added.

Keeping in view the low literacy rate in country, NCHD adopted a two pronged approach to provide access to education i.e. Adult Literacy Programme for the mothers and Universal Primary Education through its Feeder Schools in the remote areas for the unprivileged children especially girls, she briefed.

There are 5,949 formal feeder schools of NCHD functional all over the country with 320,000 enrollment while 5000 adult literacy centers are being established, she further briefed. Talking about NCHD programs she said, NCHD has designed its education program focusing especially on the deprived women; by establishing 95% literacy centers for women in the remote areas.

Both women and men should be made aware of their responsibilities to promote and practice gender equality, she informed. The society should be made aware that both boys and girls were equal, and both should have equal access to resources, Razina said.

She said literacy was the best remedy as the issues of terrorism, inequality, gender disparities, poverty, social injustice, ethnic and linguistic disadvantages, and gaps between geographic areas could only be addressed through literacy.
