A high-level meeting on Thursday held here to launch action against those involved in water theft from Abbasia Link Canal by creating breaches in it and all the illegal waterways from Uch Sharif to Qasimwala Bangla.
Divisional Commissioner Nayyar Iqbal chaired a meeting at his office in Bahawalpur and discussed the ways to ensure water flow in the canal.
It was decided that action would be taken against water thieves and derelict employees of the irrigation department.
Deputy Commissioner Rahim Yar Khan Jameel Ahmad Jameel, District Police Officer Bahawalpur Ameer Taimoor, MPAs Mumtaz Ali, Arshad Javed and officials of the irrigation department attended the meeting.
The meeting was told that thousands of acres land was dependent on Abbasia Link Canal for irrigation, but unavailability of water had turned the fertile land into arid and barren tracts.
The Commissioner said that elimination of illegal breaches and water theft was inevitable to ensure availability of water to the land situated at the tail end.
He directed the concerned officers to compile the record of waterways being constructed on Abbasia Link Canal and identify the illegal waterways. He said that strict legal action to be taken against people involved in creating illegal waterways on the canal.
The Commissioner said that equal and justified distribution of water must be ensured.
The irrigation department was also asked to ensure presence of its employees posted at the canal.
