Awareness campaign needed for psychiatric treatment

HYDERABAD (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News -23rd Sep,2016) : Prominent Psychiatrist, Dr. Abdul Hameed Memon stressed the need of extending the infrastructure to provide adequate psychiatric treatment to the ailing people and also for launching mental health services and awareness campaign in the country to over come sociological and medical causes spreading this disease.

Talking to this scribe on Friday, Dr. Abdul Hameed Memon said that the world is focusing and fighting with five major diseases and mental health is one of them but unfortunately neither from government side nor from public itself paying heed towards mentally ill patients.

He said that it could be examined from the fact that in our country we have only 500 qualified psychiatric doctors against more than 180 million population, while US has force of 45,000 doctors to meet this challenge.

Besides trend of disowning the patient among the parents being increasing day by day, added. He said that so far psychiatric treatment is concern, the network of mental health facilities be extended at least up to defunct divisional level as Sir C.

J. was the only institution of public sector in the province which cannot afford the increasing pressure of patients. He also said that increasing depression among the people is causing Changing behavior resulting different kinds of mental diseases among them.

He said that the number of patients suffering from mental diseases was on rise as compared to past and there is need of making serious efforts to prevent the diseases at the initial stages.

Hameed Memon said that in order to prevent depression and psychiatric diseases in the country, there must be at least one psychiatric unit in every district of the country. He said that in addition to the medical treatment, rehabilitation of the patients should also be started by establishing vocational institute within psychiatry institute.

He said there were not many psychiatrists in the country and attributed this to lack of knowledge about psychiatry among medical graduates. He said that the most important cause for psychiatric conditions was neurotransmitters abnormality which could be corrected by prescribing medication.

He said equal attention was also required to address socio-economic Problems, environmental and family related problems. He said due to lack of knowledge many of the concerned patients were also referred to faith healer and that their condition was considered to be an outcome of sin committed by these patients.

He said persistent depression has emerged to be one of the risk factors for strokes, heart attacks and cardiac failure and arterial aneurysm and also a leading source of chronic renal failure. Dr. Hameed Memon urged for at least one psychiatric unit in each district of the country in order to provide adequate treatment to the concerned patients.
