The Pakistani Interior Ministry announced on Tuesday that Mufti Abdul Rauf, the brother of the leader of Jaish-e-Mohammad extremist Islamist group responsible for the deadly attack on Indian military convoy in Kashmir region, had been detained
"It was decided to speed up action against all proscribed organisations. In compliance, 44 under-observation members of proscribed organisations, including Mufti Abdul Rauf and Hammad Azhar, have been taken in preventive detention for investigation," the ministry was quoted as saying by the NDTV broadcaster.
The attack took place on February 14 and killed over 40 Indian officers. This was the biggest act of terrorism in India since 2008, when over 150 people were killed in Mumbai.
India named Maulana Masood Azhar, the leader of Jaish-e-Mohammad, who resides in Pakistan, as the person responsible for ordering the attack.
After the attack, India blamed Pakistan for harboring and protecting terrorists, accusing the country of having a "direct hand" in the incident. As a punitive measure, India withdrew Pakistan's most-favored nation status and raised custom duties on goods imported from Pakistan to 200 percent.
Pakistan rejected the allegations and said that this was New Delhi's strategy to divert international attention from human rights violations taking place in the Kashmir region.
