Civil Society Representatives Express Satisfaction Over Pro Women Laws

Representatives of civil society organizations Tuesday expressed satisfaction over taking heed of the high ups towards pro women legislation in the country, making a source of relief for them.

According to them now there is a need to evolve creative ways to improve and implement these laws and suggested that technology should be introduced in implementation mechanism for ensuring benefits of these laws at grassroots level.
They said that over 24 new laws related to women issues had been passed in recent years by national and provincial assemblies while implementation mechanism of several such laws are being improved with consultation of stakeholders.
A women rights activist Saima Haider said that due to improving awareness on laws, they successfully delayed marriages of children in Sindh Province.
She added young girls of 15-29 years of age are being equipped with social mobilization and advocacy skills.
She said that the results of pro women laws started reaching at the grassroots level.
She said that mindset changes with exposure and stressed the need to provide exposure to young generation to bring change in the mindset.
Another women rights activist Fouzia Khalid said that the society needed to first differentiate between right and wrong and such pro women laws will help educating society about the rights of women.
She said that civil society, government ministries, alliances and activists should work jointly for further pro women legislation with start of public discourse on sensitive issues like early girl child marriages and other similar issues.
Maria Alim, a working woman said that lacuna in the existing pro women laws should be removed for effective implementation in order to give relief to women. She expressed the hope that present parliament will pass further pro women laws.
When contacted an official from the Ministry of Human Rights said that the ministry has devised a plan of action for the implementation of Pakistan's international commitments and the implementation of enacted laws to ensure their realization in letter and spirit.
He called upon all civil society organizations, networks and government departments to work together in a concerted manner to adopt good practices on pro women laws of any area which can be replicated or followed in other geographical areas of the country.
