The Control of Narcotics Substance (CNS) court Thursday summoned all accused and prosecution witnesses in multi-billion ephedrine scam on November 28, to expedite the trial proceeding failure to which arrest warrants would be issued for production.
The court had already indicted former Federal minister Makhdoom Shahabuddin, Ali Musa Gilani and others in the ephedrine case regarding the illegal awarding of ephedrine quota to two pharmaceutical companies Danas Pharmaceutical Limited and Berlex Lab International for the drugs in collusion with the health ministry officials that exceeded the limits fixed by the International Narcotics Control board.
It is worth mentioning that Ali Musa Gillani son of former prime minister Yusaf Raza Gillani in 2010 allegedly influenced the health ministry officials to allocate a quota of controlled chemical ephedrine, reportedly worth Rs70 billion, to two different Multan-based pharmaceutical companies.
Apart from use in medicines, the substance is also used in the manufacturing of party drugs (ecstasy).
Such companies were allocated huge quantities of ephedrine in excess of their quotas whereas both the firms did not maintain records of consumption of the controlled chemical.
The court was adjourned and next date of hearing was fixed for November 28.
