CPI-inflation up by 9.11% in May

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) based inflation increased by 9.11 percent in May 2019 as compared to the same month of last year, Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) reported Monday

ISLAMABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 3rd Jun, 2019 ) :The Consumer Price Index (CPI) based inflation increased by 9.11 percent in May 2019 as compared to the same month of last year, Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) reported Monday.

On month-on-month basis, the CPI increased by 0.78 percent in May 2019 over previous month, said PBS statement issued here.

In May, the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) increased by 1.43 percent, and Sensitive Price Index (SPI) increased by 0.78 percent respectively.

The average inflation rate during the period July-May also rose by 7.19 percent as compared to the same period of last year.

Pakistan Bureau of Statistics collects the retail prices and computes the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for a basket of 487 items collected from 40 cities and 76 markets.

For each item four (04) quotations are collected from each market on monthly basis. Wholesale Price Index (WPI), on monthly basis, is compiled from 21 markets and 21 cities for a basket of 463 items. Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI) is compiled on weekly basis for 53 items from 53 markets of 17 cities.

On year-on-year basis, the items that witnessed increase in price during May 2019 against the same month of last year included gas (85.

31%), onion (77.52%), cabbage (74.87%), watermelon (55.73%), bus fare (51.16%), garlic (49.99%), tomatoes (46.11%), lemon (43.46%), bottlegourd (34.83%), pulse moong (33.65%), newspaper (33.33%), mango (28.99%), CNG (28.23%) MBA tuition fees (27.73%), sugar (26.53%), High Speed Diesel (23.86%), petrol (23.63%), gold Tezabi (20.07%), lady finger (15.09%), mutton (12.04%), pulse gram (11.43%), Apple (11.20%), bananas (10.82%), electricity (8.48%), wheat (7.40%), dates (7.32%) and house rent (6.15%).

The items that witnessed increase in price during May 2019 against the same month of last year included betel nuts (35.55%), gram whole (Yellow) (12.76%), eggs farm (10.52%) and Aloo bukhara (4.79%).

During the month of May 2019, the Year on Year increase in the Trimmed Core Inflation was observed at 7.5% whereas it was 5.1% during May, 2018 over May, 2017 while increase in the Non-food & Non-energy Core Inflation has been observed as 7.2% whereas it was 7.0% during May, 2018 over May, 2017.
