Crackdown Continues Against Motorcyclists Without Helmet

MULTAN, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 20th Jul, 2025) In an ongoing nationwide crackdown, traffic authorities ticketed hundreds of motorcyclists for not wearing helmets, signaling that helmet usage is no longer a matter of personal choice but a legal and life-saving requirement.

The campaign, with a special focus on Punjab including Multan, Bahawalpur, and Dera Ghazi Khan, is being implemented with zero tolerance, aiming to enforce helmet laws that are often ignored despite their critical importance in preventing fatal injuries.

Senior traffic officials emphasize that the crackdown is driven by the rising number of road traffic accidents involving motorcycles, many of which result in serious or fatal head injuries. “Helmets are proven to save lives. This campaign is about protecting families, not just issuing fines,” said a traffic police spokesperson.

In a recent incident in Bahawalpur, a brother and sister riding a motorcycle were struck by a van. The brother, who was wearing a helmet, escaped with minor injuries, but his sister, who was not wearing one, sustained a severe head injury and remains in critical condition.

The case has become a sobering example of the importance of helmet usage.

According to global data from the World Health Organization, wearing a helmet reduces the risk of death in a crash by 42% and the risk of serious head injury by nearly 70%. Pakistani traffic enforcement officials are using such statistics to stress the urgency of compliance.

Authorities also report that motorcyclists wearing helmets have a significantly higher chance of surviving an accident than those without one. “This is not about fines. This is about saving lives. People need to understand that a helmet can mean the difference between life and death,” said the official.

The government, in collaboration with local administrations and road safety organizations, is also conducting awareness campaigns to educate the public on helmet safety.
