Diabetes is the seventh leading causes of death globally, causing 2.1 million deaths per year and it is projected that diabetes will be the ninth leading cause of death by 2030.

Talking to APP here on Tuesday ,on the eve of the world Diabetic Day Vice Chancellor Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences (LUMHS), Jamshoro, consultant Physician and Diabetologist Professor Dr Bikha Ram Devrajani informed that Pakistan is one of the countries having the highest number of diabetics.

This year the theme of World Diabetes Day 2018 and 2019 is "The Family and Diabetes".

Dr Bikha Ram said that diabetes is a global health challenge adding that World Diabetes Day has now become a major event to spread awareness about this deadly disease and Diabetic campaign aims to raise awareness of the impact that diabetes has on the family and support network of those affected and promote the role of the family in the management, care, prevention and education of diabetes.

Dr Bikha Ram informed that 415 million people were living with diabetes worldwide and 1.5 million people lose their lives due to diabetes every year in the world.

He said that Pakistan had also seen a sharp rise in the number of diabetic patients. These facts and figures reiterated the importance of urgent action against the disease, added.

He said that diabetes can be controlled if people are aware about their problems and they can reduce complications like heart attack, kidney failure, paralysis and diabetic retinopathy by regular check-up and using a balanced diet.

He said that sugar has become a fast spreading disease and its major causes are over eating, to avoid physical exercise and family background.

He said that doctors should also aware the patients about the preventive measures while giving them the treatment. He emphasized the young doctors to focus on knowledge and research in order to rid modern diseases of current age, Dr.Bikha Ram added.

Highlighting significance of lifestyle changes, he emphasized need to perform daily physical exercise for at least 30 minutes, having a healthy diet, losing excessive body weight and avoiding smoking. He said that a healthy breakfast should be taken to stabilize metabolism, and the fruits should be taken raw and not as juices. Fish is the best source of protein and should be taken twice a week, he said.

About the diet and nutrition Professor Dr Bikha informed that the patients are usually dependent on soup kitchens or shelters for meals, and it may be difficult to plan meals to coincide with insulin administration.

Professor Dr Bikha Ram also explained that the coincide should work with shelters and soup kitchens to promote healthy food choices and provide supplemental snacks to those with diabetes.

Media can play very vital role in the process of hindering the way of diabetes however general masses should also adopt the habits of physical exercise and careful eating to avoid this disease, Professor Dr Bikha said.
