ECP to hold meeting to review SC decision on reserved seats

The meeting, set for July 18, will discuss how to implement the Supreme Court's decision regarding the SIC reserved seats.

ISLAMABAD: (UrduPoint/UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News-July 16th, 2024) The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has scheduled a meeting to review the Supreme Court's ruling on reserved seats, the sources familiar with the matter said on Tuesday.

The meeting, set for July 18, will discuss how to implement the Supreme Court's decision regarding the SIC reserved seats.

The ECP Secretary and legal officials will provide briefings during the session.

A SC 13-member bench, led by Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa, ruled that PTI is entitled to reserved seats, a significant setback for Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's coalition government.

Justice Mansoor Ali Shah announced the 8-5 majority verdict, overturning the Peshawar High Court's decision that had supported the ECP's refusal to allocate reserved seats to the SIC.

Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa, Justice Jamal Mandokhail, Justice Naeem Afghan, Justice Yahya Afridi, and Justice Ameenuddin Khan dissented from the majority opinion.

In response to the Supreme Court's ruling, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has filed a review petition, seeking to overturn the July 12 decision. The PML-N argued that PTI was not originally involved in the case, which was initiated by the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC). The party contends that granting reserved seats to PTI based on the SIC's petition violates the law.

The PML-N's petition Names both the SIC and the Election Commission of Pakistan as respondents.
