Electronic Crimes (Amendment) Bill 2018 suggests death sentence for blasphemy

People posting obscene material social media will be jailed for four years besides a fine of Rs 3 million

Islamabad (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 22nd September, 2018) The Prevention of Electronic Crimes (Amendment) Bill 2018 was laid before the Senate.

State Minister for Revenue Hammad Azhar presented the bill on behalf of Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui. The Presiding Officer referred the bill to the standing committee concerned.

According to a news report published in a local newspaper, recommendations have been made to sentence the accused of disrespecting Quran to life while a person committing blasphemy or making false blasphemy accusation against someone will be hanged to death. Meanwhile, someone making derogatory statements against the religious scholars will sentenced to jail for three years.

Furthermore, the bill recommends to fine and sentence Ahmedis for three years for declaring themselves Muslims or preaching their ideology. People posting obscene material social media will be jailed for four years besides a fine of Rs 3 million while distributing such material without any legal reason will account for three-year jail and Rs 2 million fine.

According to the bill, someone spreading offensive material against a religion to hurt the sentiments of people belonging to that religious class will be jailed for ten years or a fine or both. The person who insults the prescription of the Holy Quran, will be punished with life imprisonment whereas a person guilty of humiliation will also be punished.
