US President Donald Trump says he brokered ceasefire between Pakistan and India
WASHINGTON: (UrduPoint/UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News-July 19th, 2025) United States President Donald Trump on Saturday confirmed the downing of five Indian jets.
During a ceremony at the White House, President Trump said the situation between Pakistan and India was getting worse and five warplanes were shot down.
The US President said he brokered ceasefire between Pakistan and India.
President Trump said that both the countries were heading towards nuclear war and we resolved Pakistan-India conflict through trade.
Tensions erupt following Pahalgam incident
The recent escalation in tensions between India and Pakistan traces back to an attack in April in the Pahalgam region of Indian-occupied Kashmir, where 26 people were killed by unidentified assailants. India hastily blamed Pakistan for the incident without providing any evidence. Pakistan strongly rejected the allegations and instead offered full cooperation for an impartial international investigation.
While the United States condemned the attack, it did not support India’s unsubstantiated claims against Pakistan.
India's aggression and Pakistan's response
On May 7, India, emboldened by a show of force, launched an attack on Pakistan, effectively initiating a state of war. In retaliation, Pakistan defended its territory robustly and claimed to have shot down five Indian Air Force fighter jets, including Rafales. Though India consistently denied the loss of its aircraft, a recent statement by U.S. President Donald Trump lent weight to Pakistan’s claim, indirectly confirming the destruction.
India, on the other hand, claimed to have downed Pakistani jets, but Pakistan categorically denied any such losses and challenged India to produce evidence, which never surfaced.
Ceasefire and Trump’s mediation
A ceasefire was achieved on May 10 following intervention by President Trump, who engaged both nations in dialogue. He reportedly warned both sides that if hostilities continued, the United States would suspend trade with both countries.
During this period, President Trump also offered to mediate the long-standing Kashmir dispute, stating:
“I will work with both of you to find a solution to the Kashmir issue.”
Pakistan welcomes mediation, India refuses
Pakistan welcomed the US President’s mediation offer, calling it a significant step toward resolving the Kashmir conflict. In a statement, the Foreign Office said Pakistan appreciated President Trump’s efforts in promoting peace and stability in the region.
India, however, not only rejected the mediation offer but also refused to acknowledge the role played by the US in facilitating the ceasefire.
Pakistan recommends Trump for Nobel peace prize
Recognizing President Trump’s role in de-escalating the conflict, Pakistan formally acknowledged his efforts. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar even wrote to the Nobel Committee, recommending Trump for the Nobel Peace prize.
