KHYBER: (UrduPoint/UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News-August 5th, 2024) In a historic move, five women police officers have been appointed as additional Station House Officers (SHOs) in the Khyber tribal district, according to an announcement made by a senior official on Monday.
This marks the first time women have been appointed to these roles in this region, which borders Afghanistan and has faced years of militancy, presenting unique challenges for the new officers.
District Police Officer (DPO) Saleem Abbas Kulachi issued notifications for the appointments, which include four additional station house officers (SHOs). Kulachi emphasized that this initiative aims to provide access to justice for the hundreds of thousands of women in the area.
“Women in the merged districts have all the necessary capabilities and will be given opportunities to perform their duties,” said Kulachi.
Among the newly appointed officers, Mehak Pervez Masih, a junior police officer, will serve as the additional SHO for Landi Kotal, moving from her previous position at Ali Masjid police station.
Lady Constable Naila Jabbar, previously on general duty at Bara police station, is now the additional SHO at Ali Majid police station. Fatima Sameen Jan has been appointed as an additional SHO at Bara police station, while Lady Constable Nusrat will take on the role of additional SHO at Jamrud police station. Additionally, Lady Constable Shanza will perform general duties at the Khyber police lines.
Malik Habib, a tribal elder from North Waziristan, remarked that no female police officer had previously been appointed to fieldwork in the tribal areas, with women traditionally working in education and health sectors.
The Khyber district, which has seen significant activity from groups such as Lashkar-i-Islam and Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan, was once a critical supply route for US-led NATO forces in Afghanistan.
