Haroon Sultan during his election campaign for NA-148 Muzaffargarh has declared it illegal for women to cast vote in elections
Lahore (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 3rd July, 2018) Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s (PMLN) former provincial minister for religious affairs Haroon Sultan has declared it prohibited for women to cast vote.
According to media reports, Haroon Sultan during his election campaign for NA-148 Muzaffargarh has declared it illegal for women to cast vote in elections.
Haroon Sultan’s sister-in-law Syeda Zahra Basit Bukhari is contesting against him from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
The PMLN candidates are openly violating the code of conduct given by Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). However, what’s surprising is that Sultan’s own party member Maryam Nawaz is also an election candidate.
Responding to this, former minister and PMLN leader Marriyum Aurangzeb has said that this can be Sultan’s personal opinion. She said that every candidate has their own point of view; therefore, this statement is neither PMLN’s policy nor is the vision of party leadership.
Marriyum Aurangzeb said that such guidelines are issued on party level but PMLN is that party that gave five percent representation to women in the election process, making it their political right.
However, the statement by the former minister for religious affairs has raised many questions for the PMLN leadership.
